Our Story
Unveiling Casa Ezio Marchi's Heritage
Casa Ezio Marchi, a place rich in history and heritage, pays tribute to Dr. Ezio Marchi, a distinguished professor and researcher. His groundbreaking studies from 1895 to 1901 transformed Valdichiana cattle into the renowned Chianina breed. After obtaining his degree in Zooiatry, he became a professor at the Vegni Agricultural Institute in Barullo, where he initiated significant projects, including a cattle genealogical registry and experimental sheds. His studies led to the publication of 'La razza bovina di Valdichiana e le sue varietà' in 1895 and 'Sull’indirizzo necessario per migliorare la razza bovina di Val di Chiana' in 1901, solidifying the Chianina's global reputation.
The Origins
This spot has witnessed history for over 2,500 years, with its origins likely tracing back to the Etruscans. The oldest part of our building once served as a watchtower along the Via Lauretana during the 1200s, evolving over the centuries. In the 18th century, it transformed into a model farm during the enlightening revolution that propelled Valdichiana into an agricultural powerhouse.
The Restorations
The very kitchen where we enjoy our meals once housed cows, which contributed to the development of the renowned Chianina breed, initiated by Bettolle's eminent social reformer, Ezio Marchi. Born on the top floor of this house, Marchi's socially inclusive model continues to inspire smallholders throughout Tuscany.
The Project
The restoration, led by architects Elena Rigano and Julian Adda of Architeco.it in Padua, followed green and sustainable practices. It included seismic consolidation and energy redevelopment. The medieval central core, rising two floors above ground with clay walls, was preserved.Today, the farmhouse is energy class A, with a solar-powered heat pump air conditioning system and handmade Tuscan terracotta radiant flooring. It's seismically reinforced and insulated with hemp coating.Raw earth walls were carefully maintained, some left exposed, others repainted with lime. Nineteenth and Twentieth-century decorated walls were restored, including a Lombard-origin wall
A Unique Design
The lush gardens surrounding Casa Ezio Marchi were once part of Brunella Sodi's estate, who, as a dear friend, continues to advise on preserving its historical essence. In 2020, driven by a vision to conserve its former glory and craft a new chapter steeped in environmental consciousness, I acquired this property. I eagerly anticipate sharing a comprehensive tour of the house and its extraordinary history with you.
Our Rooms
We have two independent apartments and rooms available in the main house.
